Humanity i love you by E. E. Cummings

 Humanity i love you
because you would rather black the boots of
success than enquire whose soul dangles from his
watch-chain which would be embarrassing for both
parties and because you
unflinchingly applaud all
songs containing the words country home and
mother when sung at the old howard
Humanity i love you because
when you're hard up you pawn your
intelligence to buy a drink and when
you're flush pride keeps
you from the pawn shops and
because you are continually committing
nuisances but more
especially in your own house
Humanity i love you because you
are perpetually putting the secret of
life in your pants and forgetting
it's there and sitting down
on it
and because you are
forever making poems in the lap
of death Humanity
i hate you

  1. The closer I get to humanity, the more of it turns out to be people.
Humanity I love easily. People are difficult to impossible.

  2. The older I get, the more beauty I find in the perfection of nature because she somehow knows how to adapt to the unpredictable future. Humans, however, are flawed, although many of us strive for perfection. Perhaps it is because we are forced to chase after the almighty dollar, and our ongoing toil has separated us from nature and the understanding of her ways.

  3. This poem assumes a special norm to achieve the definition of humanity. It assumes that a real human is always kind and compassionate. When a person does not conform to the norm, is that human classified as a hater? Does giving the shirt from off your back make you lovable or does it make you a door mat for the takers. Will the taker thank you for your great humanity? Writer, Alexander Pope, once said "To err is human; to forgive, divine".
Can we forgive ourselves for not always being the norm?
